Stefan built the "Orchid Wall".
These pics show the finished wall and then some shots of the orchids as they bloomed in September and October. |

Purchased a new orchid, some planting media, rooting hormone,
herbs, etc.
Stefan took cuttings from his Crown of Thorns and the Ficus tree
and put them in vermiculite to root. They'll be used in future
bonsai projects.
Annalisa started a whole slew of seeds and worked to save the
White Sail. There is hope, though we aren't sure how
much. |

Purchased some hooks to hang tools... installed said hooks and
hung said tools.
Annalisa repotted all her orchids in new wooden boxes with new
moss and bark and they look like they'll be quite happy. The
orchid supplies department at Lowe's is rather empty now.
One of her orchids has re-bloomed for the first time. Very
exciting! |

I cleaned up everything in the greenhouse
so that there was nothing in there that didn't belong there.

Purchased and installed a weatherproof
switch so that we are now able to turn completely off the
vent fan. This way, we can keep the vent fan from coming
on when the thermostat is hit by the sun and it thinks it is 100
degrees in there when in fact the air temp is only 70. |

Greenhouse Lighting
Project
I added a
light over the doorway and replaced all the switches (the dimmer was
busted anyway). It was finished up on the 23rd, but I worked
on it in evenings for a couple weeks...
-
Had to
buy:
-
Two light fixtures before
one would work. The one that wouldn't work will go
somewhere on the garage.
-
Lightswitches... two
lighted regular switches and one lighted dimmer
switch.
-
Switchplate.
-
Lighted
doorbell.
-
Energy efficient light
bulb.
-
"Lamp kit" which included
a long section of hollow threaded rod and some
nuts/washers.
-
Schedule 40 PVC tubing
and fittings.
-
Teminal and junction
boxes.
-
Drill bit
extender.
-
Went
through:
-
Removing sections of the
wall and wire fishing/pulling wire.
-
Cutting a larger hole for
the additional switch.
-
Removing and replacing
switch boxes.
-
Rewiring the switches and
wiring in the new ones.
-
Running more PVC and
feeding into the existing.
-
Drilling through the peak
of the little over-door gable.
-
Modifying the light
fixture to be mounted via the threaded rod instead of a junction
box.
Somehow... that doesn't seem to
give a true representation of the trials and annoyances
I endured in completing this project. |

Replaced the spa
pump.
Again, a real trial. First I bought seals to
fix the ones that were leaking. Then I broke the impellor
trying to get to the seals. So I bought a new
impellor. Then when I put it all back together it made a
horrible noise and I realized that the motor bearings were
shot. So I ordered a new motor with pump attached. But I
ordered the wrong size so I sent it back and got the other
size. The size was right, but the threads didn't match so I
put the old pump (with new seals and impellor) on the new motor and
stuck THAT in there... that worked very well.

Cleanup
We put the scooter and the BMW out on the
deck. Purchased 20 bags of redstone (brick-like rubble) for
~$5/bag.
- Removed all the old gravel
and some soil. Replaced with new brick-rubble.
- Cleaned around all the windowsills
- Removed the lower 6" or so of the trellace
wood to facilitate keeping the windowsills clean.
- Rearranged the tables.
- Threw away the old chemicals.
